Holy Trinity Church Restoration

In March 2002 a Quinquennial report carried out at Holy Trinity identified major works of repair and restoration were needed. The cost of this extensive repair work was estimated to be in the region of £400,000.00

At this time a Restoration Appeals Committee was formed. The group headed by Heather Schofield began the painstaking task of researching funding options. Grant applications were then made to various organisations

Phase 1-Restoration of the Nave Roof

Many different skills were used in this Restoration under the constant supervision of the architects and site foreman, from the scaffolders, the slaterers, the wood preservers, the painters, the glaziers who restored the Rose window and the stonemasons who carved the new stone cross both of which are on the West gable.Without exception all of the workmen were proud of the work they had done and they were delighted when you went to see what had been achieved

Phase 2-The Restoration of the North and South Aisle Roofs

The North Aisle Roof did have its problems with rot but as expected the South Aisle Roof, particularly at the Lady Chapel end, was in a very poor condition. A structural engineer was called in to inspect and advise on the wall plate, purlins and pole plate. These have now been restored and the timber treatments have been completed.

On both the North and South Aisle Roofs an allowance was made for 21sqms of plaster to be removed from each wall. This allowance has been used up in the main body of the Church and it is now likely that the Lady Chapel will have to remain without plaster on the walls until the next phase of work commences due to lack of funds
